This year he produced the Bath Half Marathon’s first world-best performance in a time of one hour 11 mins 32 secs, slashing almost three minutes off the previous record for veterans aged 60 and over. He achieved his first record at 45 and has been smashing them ever since. He said: “That might be why I run so well now, because I didn’t pick up many injuries from running when I was younger.” But, while he ran quite a lot as a schoolboy, he only began training seriously at the tender age of 38. You would be forgiven for thinking Martin has been running for most of his life. “I think I probably run it all off anyway, so I just eat normally.” “I’ll have chips once or twice a week and maybe the odd pint or two,” he told Wales on Sunday. Martin puts his success down to a killer training routine, but isn’t too bothered about a special athlete’s diet. He has now set a whopping 30 world records – and can run a mile in just over five minutes. With a turn of pace to embarrass runners half his age, the Port Talbot grandad has set five world records this year alone. Instead of settling down to wait for his pension, retired steelworker Martin Rees has set about amassing world records. He's the fastest 60-year-old on the planet – and he’s still partial to a pint and some chips.
